The Democratic Alliance in Nelson Mandela Bay says it will use the Promotion of Access To Information Act to obtain information relating to the 200 million rand the Metro received for drought-mitigation programmes.
The party's provincial leader, Nqaba Bhanga, says the funding was granted by National Treasury during the 2018/2019 financial year and was dedicated to the city’s Municipal Disaster Recovery Grant.
But, he says not a single cent of the funds have been spent to mitigate the Metro’s water crisis, as dam levels slipped to 22 percent of combined capacity.
Bhanga says the Metro had previously indicated that the entire grant had been dedicated to the Coega Wellfield project, which has, however, been at a complete standstill due to an appeal relating to the tender process.
