DA in PE to sharpen security after office robbery

The DA in Nelson Mandela Bay said it would have to sharpen security at it's constituency offices following an armed robbery on Friday in which a shot was fired.

DA mayoral candidate, Athol Trollip, said "armed men burst into the DA's Ngqura Constituency Office in Kwazakhele and fired a gun shot at DA activists and councillors before stealing countless cell phones and a bank card."

"In what seems to have been a well-orchestrated operation targeted specifically at the DA, the armed men knew exactly which individuals to target in order to steal their bank cards," Trollip said.

He said the incident "brings into perspective that these elections are a matter of life and death for some people and some of our activists lives were threatened when a shot actually went off in very close proximity of someone's head in our Ngqura offices on Friday so we're not taking this lightly."

Trollip also blamed some ANC officials for allegedly inciting violence against his party, claiming that ANC MEC Fikile Xasa and  ANC MP Tony Duba also allegedly declared that "the war had begun to defend the ANC branches" and that the ANC should protect the "elderly" from the unruly ill disciplined "Youth"/DA.

He said he had written to the Independent Electoral Commission to investigate.

The ANC reportedly denied the allegation saying that the robbery was a criminal matter.

Meanwhile, the DA  said it was also deeply concerned about a weekend break-in and theft of its computers, external hard drives, in the Sisonke region in Southern KZN.
It was the second such theft of computer equipment from the party in the area.

Francois Rodgers, the DA Constituency head in Sisonke, says this leads them to believe that the robbery was orchestrated for one purpose and that was the theft of DA equipment and information.
The first theft occurred on the same day that three DA councillors recently resigned and defected to the ANC.

The DA said it had reported the matter to the police.
