DA councillor's alleged shooters denied bail and considered a flight risk

DA ward councillor Jaques Alexander

Phiwokuhle Mothemela

The five men accused of shooting and wounding Kouga municipality DA ward councillor Jaques Alexander were denied bail in the Humansdorp Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Luciano Jacobs, Mthunzi Lani, Lutho Mbatha, Athenkosi Gidane and Andy Davids all face charges of attempted murder, the possession of firearms, ammunition and a stolen vehicle as well as robbery.

This is after Alexander was shot and wounded outside of the municipality's headquarters in Da Gama road in February this year.

During the bail judgement on Tuesday, the court found the five accused a flight risk and added their release on bail could pose a danger to society.

They will all return to court on the 22nd of August for the bail judgement to be read into court records in isiXhosa and Afrikaans.
