The George DA ward councillor accused of shooting a 26-year-old man in the arm, appeared in the Thembalethu District Court on Tuesday.
Ludwe Qupe (32) is facing a charge of attempted murder after the shooting just before midnight on Monday January 27.
Southern Cape police spokesman Malcolm Pojie said information obtained from the community suggested that the two men had been talking in Sandkraal Road in Thembalethu on the outskirts of George, when the firearm allegedly in Qupe's possession went off and hit the victim in the left arm.
The injured man was taken to a local hospital and after his discharge reported the matter to George police.
Qupe was arrested on Friday January 31, appeared in the Thembalethu Magistrate's Court on the same day and was released on R1000 bail.
The firearm allegedly used during the incident was a .38 Special revolver and was found at the home of one of Qupe's friends after his arrest. The weapon was sent for ballistics testing.
The case was postponed until April 11 for further investigation.
The George Council indicated that it would not take action against Qupe until the court case had been finalised.
