DA calls on SAHRC to probe EC bucket toilets

The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape has called on the Human Rights Commission to investigate all areas in the province where there are settlements with no toilets.

DA MPL, Dacre Haddon says he personally visited various communities last year after receiving information of settlements where inadequate or no toilets and sanitation exist.

He says the 2011 Census revealed that the Eastern Cape had the highest number of households, one out of eight, that had no toilets and the highest number of households with no access to piped water, among other infrastructure shortages.

"People throughout the province continue to live in squalor and without human dignity while funding is diverted to host events such as the Afcon soccer tournament," said Haddon.

"Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has cut R11.6-million from its annual service-delivery budget to pay for the event."

"My request to the Human Rights Commission is with reference to section 24 of the Bill of Rights in our Constitution, that everyone has the right to live in an environment that is not harmful to their health," Haddon added.
