DA calls for investigation into sex-for-jobs allegations in EC

The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape has called for an immediate investigation into numerous allegations of sex-for jobs and housing scandals reported in the province.

The DA's Premier Candidate, Nqaba Bhanga, was joined by DA Women’s Network Federal Leader, Nomafrench Mbombo and DAWN Provincial Chairperson, Georgina Faldtman at a media briefing at DA headquarters in Walmer, Port Elizabeth, on Monday.

Mbombo said a number of cases have been reported by women from Reeston in East London and in Nelson Mandela Bay's Missionvale area.

She said several woman have come forward alleging that they were victims of sex offered in return for jobs relating to the Public Works Department's Extended Public Works Programme.

Mbombo said in another incident, a woman from the Enoch Migijima Local Municipality allegedly lost her RDP home because she refused to sleep with an official from the department.

She further told the media that the women were exploited because of their vulnerability and desperation for jobs and housing.

Mbombo said part of the problem was that many of the cases had not been reported to the police as the women in question feared incriminating themselves and of being viewed as willing participants.
