D-Day for Mossel Bay home owners to evacuate

Tuesday is D-day for residents in Mossel Bay who were granted an extra few days to evacuate their homes.

This, after the Mossel Bay Municipality served evacuation notices on at least 29 home owners at Seeumeeu Vlug and Tuscan Village residential complex, because of safety concerns.

A geo-technical report had fond that the ground on which the properties were built had the same effect as when a sand dune starts giving way on one side and then collapses.
Large cracks formed in houses in the residential complex and residents have been told to evacuate their homes.

In the meantime a managing member of the home owners association, Attie Roos told Algoa Fm News that homeowners decided to obtain legal aid.

Roos says homeowners would like to know their rights after they were told by the Mossel Bay Municipality that they are fully responsible for the financial implications. Acting municipal manager, Harry Hill says the homeowners or their insurance companies must pay the cost of the demolition.

Homeowners are also responsible for the cost of alternative housing. During a meeting with homeowners last week, residents were warned that due to the current state of affairs, their properties might also not sell.
