Twenty-one year old Port Elizabeth man, Brent Cunningham, has been denied bail in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates court.
Magistrate Gavin Juicy made the ruling on Thursday on the basis of Cunningham's history of violent behaviour.
He also said that the had to take into consideration that he had breached bail conditions in the past and that he had a duty to protect society.
Magistrate Juicy also said that Cunningham was likely to interfere with witnesses referring to the cellphone message that he had sent to Ballan's new boyfriend while in custody.
Cunningham has pleaded not guilty to assaulting former girlfriend Shireen Ballan and two other people in December.
