Crime prevention programme to be launched in NMB

A major crime prevention programme to create a safer Central Business District in Nelson Mandela Bay will come into operation in the first week of October.

The programme is a joint initiative between the Municipality and the Nelson Mandela Bay Development Agency.

It also forms part of the Take Back Our City Campaign, which is being spearheaded by the Municipality, the SA Police Service as well as the city's religious sector.

MBDA spokesperson, Luvuyo Bangazi said the MBDA Security Programme is an additional private sector security support layer which will be introduced to augment law enforcement capacity in the CBD to prevent and reduce crime.

"It will introduce 63 trained and accredited security guard officers, five vehicle units, including two K9 reaction retrofitted vehicles, eight trained dogs for criminal apprehension, patrolling, narcotics detection, amongst other," he said.

Key inner-city nodes, including the Donkin Reserve, Govan Mbeki / Strand Street, Central, Parliament Street and Kings Beach have been  designated as patrol zones for vehicle, K9 and foot patrolling units.
