Cricket bat murder accused back behind bars

A wanted murder suspect appeared briefly in court in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday after a Humewood Trio Task Team rearrested him after a seven month-long search.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu say 20 year old Zolile Mfeketho has been charged with the murder of 19 year old NMU student Asadullah Ajimudin - who was clubbed to death with a cricket bat at his Summerstrand residence in August 2015.

Colonel Naidu says the investigating officers, with the assistance of the PE K9 Unit, followed up on information and surrounded a shack in Walmer location on Tuesday night.

They found Mfeketho and four other people sleeping inside and arrested him.

He had previously been arrested in September 2016  for the murder of Ajimudin but due to a bungle in court was released in August 2017.

Colonel Naidu says a warrant for his arrest was issued and he was finally re-arrested this week.

Mfeketho was charged with murder and robbery at Wednesday's court appearance and was remanded in custody until later this month.

The Acting Cluster Commander for the Mount Road Cluster, Brigadier Andrew Louw commended the team for their  persistence in re-arresting the accused.
