The Department of Correctional Services has reported 98 new COVID19 infections among sentenced inmates at East London Correctional Centre.

Department spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, said this took the number of infected prisoners to 173 while the number of officials who tested positive for the virus stood at 50.

He said there were 59 recoveries and two recorded deaths of inmates at the East London facility.

Meanwhile, Nxumalo said nine new infections were reported in the Western Cape, while an official in Kimberley tested positive, taking the number of COVID19 infections within the Department of Correctional Services to 321.

“The number of recoveries has increased to 92,” he said.

“In order to avail immediate expertise in the management of infections, prevention, and control measures, the Department has appointed a medical advisory panel and an additional 393 nursing personnel.”

“This measure is also aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Department in dealing with COVID19, particularly in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape,” Nxumalo added.
