Court order obtained to interdict Komani protesters

It has been a challenging year for residents from Komani with the recent flooding preceded by protests calling for the Enoch Mgijima Municipality to be dissolved.

The Municipality has now obtained a court interdict against any current or future unlawful protest action in the Komani district until the 30th of March.

In a statement issued by the Border-Kei Chamber of Business and Civic Ratepayers’ Association of Enoch Mgijima, it said that residents would have to take their grievances to the courts.

The interdict restrains all implicated respondents from interfering with the daily activities of members rendering services and includes the protection of various rights of members, their businesses, employees and customers.

The interdict further prohibits any truck or vehicle to block any roads and if the order is breached, SAPS are mandated to make an arrest.

Last month, the Komani Protest Action Committee said civil society and business have indicated support for the call for the Enoch Mgijima Municipality to be dissolved due to lack of service since November last year.

In the last few weeks, Komani was rocked by severe flooding leaving roads and bridges flooded and many residents displaced, adding to the community's woes.
