Police in Humansdorp are looking for an unknown suspect who assaulted a couple during a house robbery on Friday.
Spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart says it is alleged that the man gained access to their house in Voortman Street through an open window.
A 50-year-old woman, who was awake at the time, came across the suspect at about 3.30 am who already had a bag full of stolen goods.
Swart says the wife screamed and woke up her 55-year-old husband who came to investigate.
The couple was then assaulted with what is believed to be a panga and sustained several injuries.
She says the wife was hit over the head and the husband sustained more serious injuries.
The husband is currently being treated in a hospital in Port Elizabeth.
The suspect fled through the back door and is still at large.
According to Swart, he stole some household items including groceries, cell phones and laptop.
