Deputy Mayor Chippa Ngcolomba told Council on Thursday that Mayor Ben Fihla had forwarded the request to rename the Port Elizabeth airport to the province for consideration.
The ruling party wishes to rename the airport after Sipho Hashe, one of the Pebco 3, who was abducted from the airport in May 1985 and subsequently murdered by security police.
Ngcolomba said that the “necessary processes” would now take place that include public participation.
Delivering a statement on behalf of Fihla, who was absent, the Deputy-Mayor said the metro was steadily being stabilised with senior vacancies being filled.
He said in addition to the positions of city manager, CFO and Executive Director: Corporate Services, candi-dates for the positions of ED of Infrastructure and Engineering; Human Settlements; Electricity and Energy and Chief Operating Officer would be put to Council for approval.
Ngcolomba added that interviews for the remaining vacant ED positions would be conducted on Friday.
The Deputy-Mayor also told Council after a heated debate that a full report on the establishment of a metro police force would be tabled for consideration and debate and that the absence of the metro police chief from the municipality’s Organogram would be rectified.
