Police in East London arrested a 31-year-old suspect who was part of a dramatic house robbery in Dorchester Heights on Friday morning.
Spokesperson Captain Mluleki Mbi says five suspects overpowered a Chinese National as he was getting into his car in the driveway and forced him back into his car where he was assaulted.
The homeowner managed to press a panic button while suspects were ransacking his house for money and other valuable goods.
A security company arrived on the scene, followed by an exchange of gunfire between the robbers and armed response personnel.
The gang fled the scene with cash, foreign currency, Cellphones, Passports and ID documents.
Mbi says when police arrived on the scene they did a thorough search of the area and managed to arrest one suspect who was hiding a few metres away from the scene.
He was in the possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as stolen documents and cash.
Police says this arrest is a major breakthrough in a recent spate of attacks and robberies in Mdantsane and East London, where Chinese nationals are being targeted.
The suspect will appear in court soon.
