The Congress of the People in the Eastern Cape has blamed the municipal workers strike in Dutywa on the acting municipal manager who was seconded to the town by the Bhisho government.
Cope councillor, Nkosinathi Ndlodaka, says one of the key tasks of Sibongile Nqgele was to facilitate the appointment of a full time municipal manager.
But, he says Nqgele is also vying for the top post and in trying to gain union support, had allegedly made promises to them.
Ndlodaka says one of the matters that sparked the protests was that of a rental allowance which is still before the bargaining council.
Meanwhile, Ndlodaka says striking municipal workers trashed offices this morning, overturning rubbish cans inside the municipal building in Dutywa.
He says they're also burning tyres in the streets.
Police are monitoring the situation but have not taken any action as yet.
