An Eastern Cape policeman and a 21-year-old suspect were shot and wounded during an armed robbery at a retail store in Addo on Tuesday.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the drama unfolded around 11h50 when Addo police members were alerted to a business robbery in progress.
As they converged on the store, they encountered four men fleeing the premises with three bags of loaded stolen goods.
Colonel Naidu says that in the ensuing shootout, a police Constable was shot in the buttocks, arm and left knee.
A young suspect was wounded in the left knee and apprehended while a 9mm Norinco pistol, with the serial number filed off, was recovered.
Colonel Naidu says that with the assistance of the Kariega K9 unit and private security, two other suspects aged 31 and 33 were also arrested.
All the stolen property, which was mainly cellphones and cash, was recovered while police also impounded the getaway vehicle - a white Toyota Avanza.
The suspects are being held in custody and are expected to appear in the Kirkwood magistrate's court soon on charges which include attempted murder and armed robbery.
