Cop accused of fleeing scene of fatal accident to appear in court

A 46-year-old detective stationed at Thembalethu in the Western Cape will appear in court on Monday, for his alleged involvement in a hit and run accident involving two toddlers.

It is alleged that on the 29th of July the children, aged three and four, were crossing Nelson Mandela Boulevard when they were struck by a white Nissan Hardbody belonging to the Thembalethu Detective Branch.

It is further alleged that the Warrant Officer, who was on duty at the time, failed to stop at the scene and did not report the accident.

The four-year-old later died in hospital while the three-year-old was later discharged.

The Officer was arrested on Friday and he will appear in the George Magistrates Court on Monday.

He is facing a charge of culpable homicide, attempted murder and defeating the ends of Justice.

The matter was also handed over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate IPID.
