Convicted criminal sentenced for first of three PE murders he is linked to

Two men convicted of the brutal murder of the 86-year-old Port Elizabeth woman, Ann Smit were sentenced at the city’s High Court on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Junior Lungisa and 28-year-old Sizwe Jika brutally assaulted Smit in her Martha Street home in Kamma Park in May of 2018.

Smit later died from her injuries in hospital.

They were also sentenced for housebreaking, theft and aggravated robbery.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says the duo each received 25 years imprisonment for the murder, five of which was suspended.

Both men received an additional 20, 15, five and three years imprisonment respectively.

Naidu says the sentences will run concurrently so they will serve 20 years each in prison.

Meanwhile, Jika who is currently serving a 16-year sentence for six other housebreaking cases is expected back in court next month for being linked to two other murders also committed in Port Elizabeth.

Whilst in prison, Jika's DNA linked him to the brutal murder of a 26-year-old PE mother Kelly Bain who was murdered while her infant was sleeping at their house in Brymore in 2018.

Jika's DNA also linked him to the murder of the 83-year-old Ann Ferreira of Summerstrand whose body was found in her house in Kuruman Kloof, also in May of 2018.
