Controversial Nigerian pastor denied bail in the PE magistrate's court

Controversial Nigerian pastor, Tim Omotoso, was denied bail in the Port Elizabeth magistrate's court on Friday.

The 58-year-old Durban-based televangelist, faces 22 charges related to human trafficking and sexual assault.

Magistrate Thandeka Mashini said that Omotoso was a flight risk and may be able to influence and intimidate witnesses.

She also said that "part" of her decision was based on the fact that there has been a public outcry in relation to cases of human trafficking and sexual assault.

The leader of the Jesus Dominion International Church had been in custody since his dramatic arrest by the Hawks and armed members of the SAPS Tactical Response Team.

Supporters of Omotoso's victims celebrated the magistrate's decision outside the court building while his usually vocal supporters were gathered in discussion.

Omotoso's case was postponed to 21 July for further investigation.
