The South African Maritime Safety Authority says smaller craft in Algoa Bay need to be on the lookout for a number of containers that blew off a container ship in gale force winds on Saturday.
SAMSA's Brian Colenutt says 23 containers measuring 12 metres in length were blown overboard in the howling south western.
Colenutt says two containers with machinery inside have already been washed up on the Algoa Bay coastline.
"There is a navigation warning that is transmitted from Cape Town radio. It is transmitted on the radio frequencies to warn ships in the area that they must be on the lookout and be cautious for the containers withing Algoa Bay. Ships all have what they call PNI which is protection and Indemnity Insurance, which will carry the cost of the retrievals" he said.
