An Eastern Cape policeman is on the run after escaping from custody while being transported to the Cala police holding cells.
Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, says 35-year-old Constable Mfundo Ntshiba, was arrested with an accomplice, Xolile Makhosini, last month on charges of house robbery, kidnapping and hijacking.
This is after a loanshark was robbed of 98 bank cards and R22 000 in cash by three men on the 5th of July, who were wearing police uniforms.
Mgolodela says Ntshiba was arrested the following day, leading to the arrest of taxi owner and traditional healer, Makhosini. The latter was later released on bail, while Ntshiba was denied bail.
She says the policeman escaped from the custody of the police on the 25th of July following his last court appearance and remains at large.
The Hawks are also searching for a third person, Vuyisani Topo, who they believe can he assist in solving the case.
