College of Medicines raises concerns over metro health systems

The College of Medicine of South Africa says its concerned about the training of doctors and specialists in the Nelson Mandela Bay region.
The College was commenting on the recent decision by senior state doctors to only perform emergency procedures at hospitals in the PE Hospital Complex.
The doctors, who face disciplinary action from the provincial health department, took the drastic decision after speaking out about a lack of staff and the poor state of health care in state hospital in the Metro.
In a statement this morning, the College of Medicine of South Africa says if elective procedures are not done, it will affect the training of registrars as some of the units in the PE Hospital Complex are used for specialist training.
College president, professor Anil Madaree, says if the training of registrars is compromised, it will be a retrogressive step
