Parents of learners at Colchester Primary have decided to close the school until the Eastern Cape Education Department appoints two teachers to fill vacant posts at the institution.
Piecy Tamboer, of the school governing body, says one post has been vacant for the past two years while another teacher retired recently.
She told Algoa FM News that as a result of the teacher shortage, some children are unsupervised during certain times of the day as the work load has to be shared between the remaining teachers, including the principal.
Tamboer said they will keep the Colchester Primary School closed for at least a month in the hope that the Bhisho Education Department will meet their needs.
"We have decided as parents to close the gates, because we are in desperate need of two teachers. We want to do it until the end of August, because by then we should have feedback from the department" she said.
