The ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay says it will reveal the outcome of coalition talks on Wednesday.
The party held its first media briefing Sunday to update the public on the state of coalition talks after the ANC lost ground to the Democratic Alliance in the local government election.
Speaking at the briefing, mayoral candidate Danny Jordaan, who was flanked by party heavy-weights, Lindiwe Sisulu and Sakhumzi Somyo, said âtalks are currently underway and are at a very sensitive stage.â
Jordaan said they would communicate with the media and public by Wednesday when these talks are finalised. The first Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday.
âThe RTT (ANC Regional Task Team), expressed the view that the ANC should pursue an approach on coalitions that puts the interests of the communities first,â Jordaan said.
âFurthermore, the RTT agreed that the formation of any coalition government in Nelson Mandela Bay must be based on the principle that those we work with, are prepared to advance the agenda of radical socio-economic transformation.â
Jordaan also took a dig at the DA saying the âpremature celebration of the victory by one political party over the past few days is false, misleading and an act of desperation.â
âNo party received more than 50% in the Metro â contrary to the misinformation by some desperate elements that seem to suggest that they are winners,â Jordaan said.
The DA won 46.7% of the vote, earning 57 seats in Council to the ANCâs 40.9%, reducing the party to 50 seats. The UDM, UF and Cope have four seats between them.
The ANC also thanked the voters for coming out despite the inclement weather.
Jordaan lamented the âthe quality of infrastructureâ (tents) erected by the IEC in some township areas which blew over in strong winds as factors affecting voter turnout.
âThe terrible conditions influenced voter turnout,â he said.
