Gqeberha police are appealing to the public for help in tracing the mother of a newborn baby whose body was found washed ashore on Brighton Beach on Friday afternoon.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said a group of people cleaning the beach noticed a colourful blanket washed up on the shore.
She said upon further inspection, it was discovered that a newborn baby boy was washed up with the blanket.
“The race of the baby cannot be determined, however, the child is very fair-skinned. A black refuse bag containing more blankets and a placenta also washed up with the baby,” Naidu said.
An inquest docket is under investigation.
Police are appealing to anyone who can assist in tracing the mother of the baby or may know of anyone who may have been recently pregnant and no longer has a child to contact SAPS Mount Road detectives on 041 3946523/6316 or Crime Stop 08600 10111 or their nearest police station.
