Two trade unions have called for tougher action following the deaths of 20 initiates at circumcision schools in the Eastern Cape.
In a joint statement , metal workers union Numsa and health-sector union Nehawu, called on authorities to clampdown hard on bogus traditional surgeons.
They also called on the Department of Health to close down all illegal initiation schools across the Eastern Cape.
The unions have laid the blame for the perennial deaths of initiates on the commodification of the traditional custom.
