Christmas tragedy for EC family

The body of an Eastern Cape man who drowned in the Kariega River Mouth has been found.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said that the incident occurred late Sunday afternoon.

“At 16h39, Sunday, 24th December, Port Alfred NSRI duty crew were activated following reports from the SA Police Services of a drowning in progress at the Kariega River mouth, Kenton-On-Sea,” he said.

“An NSRI Port Alfred sea rescue vehicle carrying NSRI rescue swimmers, the SA Police Services, a Police Dive Unit and EC Government Health EMS responded to join lifeguards who were already on the scene searching for a local male, aged in his late 20's, who had disappeared under water while swimming across the river mouth with a friend in an effort to cross the river.”

“On arrival on the scene NSRI Port Alfred rescue swimmers joined lifeguards and a sweeping line free dive search was conducted and during the search efforts the body of the man was located underwater and recovered.  Sadly the man has been declared deceased,” Lambinon said.

He said the body of the man has been taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and police have opened an inquest docket.

Condolences are conveyed to the family by all emergency services involved.
