A 66-year-old resident died at Klein Brak Beach on Christmas Day.
Spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Craig Lambinon says by the time they were alerted, a woman had already managed to swim the man to the beach, although he was lifeless in the water.
Two lifeguards, who were in the water in front of the lifeguard tower, came out of the water and started to go down the beach towards the man to see what was wrong when they noticed, a bit further down the beach, some people carrying a man out of the surf onto the beach
Lambinon says NSRI lifeguards determined that the local man had no pulse and paramedics declared him dead on the scene.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies says an autopsy will be done this week to determine the man's cause of death.
His name cannot yet be released as he has not yet been formally identified.
The NSRI says the current full moon spring tide will reach its peak on Wednesday resulting in stronger than normal rip currents around the coastline.
Lambinon says this will result in two daily higher high tides and two daily lower low tides that will be noticeable into the new year.
