The National Sea Rescue Institute said two children drowned in a kayaking incident on Nature’s Valley Lagoon on Saturday, while a third managed to make it to shore raise the alarm.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said their rescue swimmers responded in vehicles and two rescue craft following a report that three male children, aged between 8 and 10, on a kayak got into difficulty.
He said one child reached the shore to raise the alarm.
The two rescue craft navigated the Spring high tide at the mouth to enter the lagoon.
Lambinon said; “On arrival on the scene a child was located and recovered from the water. CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) efforts were commenced but after all efforts to resuscitate the child were exhausted sadly he was declared deceased”.
He said during a search the second child was located and recovered from the water but sadly the child was declared deceased.
“A counsellor assisted the surviving child who was then taken into the care of his parents.
The bodies of the two deceased children were taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services,” Lambinon said.
Police have opened an inquest docket and the NSRI has sent a message of condolence to the family and friends of the deceased children.
