Detectives from Bethelsdorp in Gqeberha are seeking the assistance of the community in hunting down a driver who killed a child and fled the scene.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the accident happened on the main road in Qunu at about 6 pm on Tuesday.
She says it is alleged that the eight-year-old Luché Ruiters was sent to fetch water from a communal tap when the accident took place.
Ruiters sustained head injuries and died at the scene.
The driver failed to stop and witnesses could not furnish a registration number nor the make of the vehicle.
A case of culpable homicide and fleeing the scene of an accident is under investigation.
