A child who stole his grandfather's gun before killing his school principal in April last year was sentenced earlier this month to 43 years in prison.

Police Spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says the 15-year-old robbed and killed the 61-year-old Alpheus Mphumuzeni Ntuli, who was the principal at the Bhekintinta High School in Nongoma in Zululand.

He says Ntuli was reported missing the same day, and police later spotted his vehicle driving along Mkhuze Road.

The teenager drove the car, sped off, and later abandoned the vehicle near a river bank under a bridge in Odwaleni.

Ntuli's body was discovered with open wounds on his head and bruises all over his body.

The teenager was arrested soon after and faced additional charges of possession of a firearm and ammunition.
