A 24-year-old man is due to appear in court in Gqeberha on Monday following his arrest for the rape and murder of a five-year-old child two years ago.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said forensic results received by investigators on Saturday led to the immediate arrest of the man at Blozo Location in Rocklands.
She said he will be charged with the rape and murder of Chantelle Makwena in Withoogte in Rocklands in 2019.
Naidu said the child’s “badly battered and bruised body” was found in a toilet near the house.
She said the suspect was caught by the community and assaulted before police rescued him.
Naidu said at the time, he was not charged, but she said DNA was taken and sent to the Forensic Laboratory for analysis.
“On Saturday, 31 July 2021, the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Chantell Joubert received the forensic report linking the suspect to the murder and rape of the child. He was immediately arrested at Blozo location in Rocklands,” she said.
Naudi said the suspect was also charged with another rape in 2018 for which he had received bail.
