A 49-year-old man from Libode is in police custody after a firearm, hidden under his bed. was discovered by two children with fatal consequences.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says It is alleged that an 11-year-old boy was playing with his 7-year-old cousin at their home in Siqkini location on Sunday when the older child discovered the gun.
She says as he fiddled with the 9mm pistol a shot went off and he accidentally killed his cousin who took a bullet to the head.
Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Major Genera Zithulele Moses Dladla, expressed his shock at the tragic incident.
The victim was identified as Kwanele Zide.
Its’ believed the firearm belongs to their 49-year-old grandfather, although ownership of the weapon must still be established.
Colonel Naidu says the 11-year-old shooter was not arrested.
