Police in Gqeberha have arrested a 25-year-old woman who allegedly murdered her boyfriend's nine-year-old daughter at Maitlands Beach on Monday.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says the suspect is believed to have fetched the child from his house in Extention 28 in Bethelsdorp to take her for a haircut at about 9h00.
She says the woman, together with the deceased, who was identified as Quinisha Sebrand, then hiked to the beach.
Colonel Naidu says the child was swimming in the ocean when she was strangled and left on the beach.
At about 21h00, the suspect, however, went to the satellite police station in Seaview to report the incident.
The child's body was then found at Maitland Beach.
Colonel Naidu says the woman was detained on a charge of murder.
The motive for the killing is not yet known.
The woman is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate Court on Thursday.
