A 24 year old second year student at the University of Fort Hare, Alice campus, has been arrested by Centane Police on a charge of child abandonment.
Police captain Jackson Manatha says an elderly couple who had gone to Centane on Tuesday noticed a small baby wrapped in towels and left in a bushy area.
An off duty policeman was notified about the baby.
A cellphone number left on a piece of paper on the child was traced to the father.
Manatha says the mother was tracked down a short while later and admitted to having given birth to the healthy baby girl four days earlier at Victoria Hospital at Alice.
She said she'd hidden the baby because she was scared of her parents.
The young woman will appear in the Centane magistrate court soon and the child has been handed over to Centane social workers.
