Cheeky Watson and co-accused back in court for alleged fraud and money laundering

Former EP rugby boss, Cheeky Watson, appeared at the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court on Monday.

Watson, along with three other co-accused face charges of theft, fraud, corruption, money laundering and forgery - involving millions of rand.

The former senior municipal employee, Nadia Gerwel, Mandisi Mkaza, and Joeleen Wessels along with her company Zeranza are facing 43 counts involving around R12 million.

The state alleges that they had circumvented procurement processes between the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, National Treasury and Access Management, which used to manage the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The money that went missing was earmarked for the Integrated Transport System(IPTS)

Twenty-five buses sit idle because the project has failed to kick off since its inception in 2009.The multi-million rand IPTS is regarded as the city’s biggest corruption scandal.

Another accused, simply known as accused number six did not appear in court on Monday due to ill health but arrangements are in place.

The matter was postponed to the 13th of October and all the accused remain out on bail.
