Cheating by Eastern Cape learners under the spotlight

Cheating by learners in the Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal during last year's matric exams had a sequel in parliament on Tuesday.

The Department of Basic Education briefed the Portfolio Committee on Education on the progress being made with regard to the disciplinary action to be taken against those found guilty of mass cheating.

The Department's Dr Rufus Poliah told the Committee said that the disciplinary process was delayed because the learners had been allowed to write their supplementary exams first.

He said the formal hearings for the implicated learners will commence in the middle of March and the hearings for invigilators will take place after that.

Meanwhile, Agang SA withdrew a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma during the sitting of the National Assembly.

The party did not want National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to preside over the debate.

Last week, the Western Cape High Court dismissed an urgent application lodged by Agang SA to postpone the scheduling of the motion.

The party took the matter to court demanding Mbete not preside over it.
