The Ziphunzana by-pass near East London is currently closed to traffic after protesters blocked the area with burning tyres.
Police Captain Stephen Marais says members of the metro's law enforcement agency apparently went in and broke down illegally built shacks in the area earlier on Monday.
Eight people, including a 3 year old child, were injured when rubber bullets were fired at them by these municipal officers.
Marais says police were then called in to diffuse the situation.
He says they're maintaining a strong presence in the area.
A Buffalo City metro spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
