Casino fraudsters jailed after costly blunder

A Mthatha casino could have been swindled out of R10 million had it not been for a mishap made by one of its former employees which led to him been jailed for 15-years.

The National Prosecuting Authority says 26-year-old Sinethemba Mdoda was employed at the Mayfair Casino and acted in concert with 29-year-old Yamkela Ndlala in defrauding the casino via the use of forged or cloned bank credit cards and debit cards.

NPA spokesperson Luxulo Tyali says in the first incident, Mdoda unlawfully transferred points from the casino to these cards and converted the points into cash worth close on R500 000.

Mdoda then accessed his manager's computer again from where he transferred another 500 points to the value of R10 million.

But instead of sending the points to his accomplice, he mistakenly sent them to everyone in the casino's database - which led to his arrest.

Tyali says Mdoda and Ndlala have been sentenced to 15 years in prison each for their roles in defrauding the casino.
