The SPCA in George says cases of canine distemper and parvovirus have been recorded in the area.
This is a highly contagious condition and pet owners need to contact their vet urgently to make the necessary arrangements.
The SPCA says they will continue with treatments in an isolated location to avoid cross-contamination.
As a result, no pet adoptions, dog walking or boarding of animals will be allowed at the facility over the next two weeks.
Symptoms of parvovirus:
lethargy
loss of appetite
abdominal pain and bloating
vomiting and severe, often bloody diarrhoea
