A 50-year-old municipal employee who is the caretaker of the cemetery in Despatch was shot and wounded in his car on Wednesday morning.
The man works with his private vehicle, every day, overseeing funerals and other matters that need attention at the cemetery.
Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart says the caretaker, who was in his car, was approached by an unknown man just after 9 am who shot him.
She says the suspect ran away and is still on the run.
The wounded man was assisted on the scene by an undertaker who rushed him to hospital.
She says the victim will undergo surgery.
The motive for the shooting is unclear at this stage as nothing was taken or demanded from the victim.
