Carer and co-accused in court for double murder at PE retirement home

Five people arrested in connection with the murders of two elderly women at the Stella Londt retirement home in Sunridge Park, Port Elizabeth, made a brief appearance in the PE Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The four men and a woman, who is a carer at the facility, were arrested late last week.

The care giver has been identified as 34-year-old Nomgebisi Slangveld.

The other accused who appeared with her in the dock were 30-year-old Mkhuseli Damenti, 33-year-old Nyasha Manyange, 27-year-old Panganai Mabwe and 20-year-old Craig Madiro.

Slangveld was said to be on duty when 91-year-old Agnes Elaine Burns and her 87-year-old friend Rosemary Langton were killed during a robbery at the home overnight on the 9th of this month.

The next morning, they were found bound and gagged, and already deceased, in their separate rooms which had been ransacked.

A number of valuable items, including Kruger Rands, had been stolen.

Initially, police said that only Slangveld and Damenti, who are both South African citizens,  would be charged with murder and that the other three would face charges of accessory to murder and money laundering.

State Prosecutor Marius Stander announced during Monday's court proceedings, however, that all five accused will now only face a charge of murder.

The country of origin of Manyange, Mabwe and Madiro must still be determined, although one of them is said to be from Zimbabwe.

The case was postponed to Tuesday for bail proceedings to get underway.

More charges could be added as the investigation continues.
