The Port Elizabeth Flying Squad arrested three suspects for committing fraud after they stole a woman’s bank card after she tried to withdraw money from an ATM in Main Road in Walmer, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.
On Wednesday, the 39-year-old woman was trying to withdraw money from her account at an ATM in Walmer when she was approached by three suspects between the ages of 20 and 30 who managed to distract her steal her card.
“Money was withdrawn from her account at three different ATM’s in the Walmer area,” police spokeswoman, Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said.
After following up on information on the suspect’s whereabouts the members of the flying squad arrested them within the vicinity of Kwazakele.
“The members confiscated the VW Polo the suspects were driving and their cell phones were seized,” Van Rensburg said.
“Card scheming at our ATM’s is a big concern and the arrest is a breakthrough.”
Investigators will follow up on previous cases in Port Elizabeth as a means to determine if the suspects are linked to it.
The Mount Road Cluster Commander Maj Gen Funeka Siganga was commended for the swift arrest.
The suspects will appear before the Port Elizabeth Magistrate Court on Friday facing charges of fraud.
