An unknown man is missing at sea after his canoe capsized on the Knysna Lagoon on Wednesday.
Spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Craig Lambinon says a good Samaritan who tried to rescue the man, himself had to be rescued and taken to hospital.
He says the incident happened after 3 pm between Cathy's Park and Costa Sarda, about 200 - 300 meters off-shore.
The tragedy unfolded during the peak of the Spring high tide coinciding with the blue Supermoon.
Lambinon says the canoe is still submerged and divers searched the wreck with no sign of the missing man.
He says the man remains unidentified and it is believed that he was the only one on board.
The good Samaritan, believed to be a shoreline angler, was transferred to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Lambinon says the search for the missing canoeist will continue.
