Calls on Zuma to appoint suitable person to lead NPA

The Council for the Advancement of the Constitution has called on president Jacob Zuma to appoint a suitable person to lead the National Prosecuting Authority.

The appeal from the Council comes in the wake of the dropping of charges yesterday against one of two men accused of the brutal attack on Western Cape teenager Anene Booysen, the acquittal of former Fidentia boss, J Arthur Brown and the acquittal of police officers in the Andries Tatane murder.

The organisation's Lawson Naidoo, says the NPA is in crisis and its public credibility in tatters.

"The NPA has been without an effective head for over 5 years now, since advocate Vusi Pikole was suspended in September 2007 and if the Government is serious about the rule of law and about fighting crime in our society then one would expect that they would give some priority to appointing a suitable qualified person to lead the NPA to ensure that public confidence is restored as soon as possible", Naidoo said.
