Calls for closure in Eastern Cape murders

The ANC in the Eastern Cape has called on the police and justice department to speed up investigations into the mystery murders of several women in Tholeni Village near Butterworth.

The appeal was made at the ANC's provincial lekgotla.

In a statement yesterday, ANC provincial chairperson Pumulo Masualle, said a task team should be set up to investigate the Tholeni murders.

At least 10 women have been killed in the area in the past 18 months and a number of arrests have been made.

However, police are still investigating several unsolved cases.

"The increasing number of killings and rape of women and children in the Eastern Cape, especially in eTholeni village has reaching worrying proportions," Masualle said.

"It is perturbing that the Justice Department and the South African Police don't seem to be aggressively attending to these violent murders and rape incidents in these communities."

Masualle said "as the ANC in the province we strongly believe that it is high time that a task team made up of the Police, Intelligence officers and the National Prosecuting Authority be put together and assigned to Tholeni."

"This task team will investigate these killings in Tholeni, open cases and take them to court where magistrates and Judges will have to attend to them speedily, within the parameters of the law. This approach needs to be implemented in other problematic parts of the country," he added.

Eastern Cape ANC will on Monday morning visit the family of the woman hacked to death in Tholeni Village near Butterworth this weekend.

Member of Parliament, Daphney Qikana together with PEC Member and ANC Provincial Spokesperson, Mlibo Qoboshiyane will visit the family Monday afternoon.
