Butterworth man shot dead in car hijacking

A man has been shot dead during a hijacking outside a tavern near Butterworth in the Eastern Cape.

Police Captain Jackson Manatha, says the man left his car parked outside the tavern with the keys in the ignition, and two women passengers in the vehicle.

He says the man heard the women screaming, and he and a friend ran to the car park to investigate.

Manatha says the friend arrived at the car first, and saw three armed men forcing the women out of the car.

He says one of the hijackers pointed a gun, and the car owner was shot three times in the upper body and died at the scene.

The hijackers drove away, and no arrests have been made.
