The Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, convicted and sentenced a 23-year-old man to 25 years imprisonment for rape, the Eastern Cape police said.
Spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said the court convicted and sentenced Zuko Mandlakhe for the rape of a 24-year-old woman.
“It alleged that the victim was called by the suspect and told that he bought meat for a braai and drinks for them to enjoy. The victim asked her friend to accompany her.
He said the woman wanted to go home at night so she could go to work the next day.
“The suspect took out the fire-arm and told them that no one is leaving or he will shoot them. The suspect called the victim’s friend outside, after five minutes they heard gun shots and the suspect came in and told them that he shot her friend. He had tried to rape the friend of the victim but in vain,†he said.
The woman reported the incident to the Msobomvu police and cases of rape and pointing of fire-arm were opened.
He was found guilty of rape, robbery , possession of unlicensed fire-arm, possession of unlicensed ammunition and attempted rape.
