A business robbery suspect, who was arrested on Friday by Port Elizabeth police, has died in hospital.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Pricilla Naidu says two men robbed a café in Greenbushes of cash, cigarettes and two cell phones before fleeing the scene.
She says during the chase, police fired two shots in an attempt to stop the suspects and their vehicle collided with a taxi on the N2 Uitenhage Road offramp.
Naidu says the 44-year-old driver was arrested at the scene, while a 34-year-old ran away and jumped over the railings of a bridge and fell into a river.
He was found in possession of a revolver and the stolen cell phones.
Colonel Naidu says he sustained multiple injuries and was taken to hospital.
An inquest docket has been opened following his death on Sunday morning.
The remaining suspect will appear in court on Monday on charges of business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.
